How often should I go for a dentist for a check up?

The standard recommendation is to visit your dentist every 6 months for check-ups and cleanings. This frequency level works well for most people, though some people with gum disease, or a weakened immune system may need to visit the dentist more frequently.

Why have a check up every 6 months

So that the dentist can check for problems that you may not see or feel
To allow the dentist to find early signs of decay (decay doesn’t become visible or cause pain initally)
To treat any other oral health problems found (the earlier a problem is found, the more manageable it is)

Fillings

At some point in ours lives, most people will get a cavity in their teeth. In the majority of cases, the decay is removed and filled in to prevent further decay.

Composite Resin Fillings

Composite resin fillings are an alternative to traditional metal dental fillings. Fillings which look like a natural tooth are known as composite resin fillings. Resin dental fillings are strong, durable, and look very natural looking. How are composite resin fillings accomplished?

How are composite resin fillings accomplished?

Initially you will be given a local anaesthetic to numb the area. The decayed area of the tooth is then removed with drills, micro air abrasion or a dental laser.

A special dental material is used to roughen up the surface of the exposed enamel, to achieve a stronger bond. Composite resin fillings are applied in thin layers, and slowly built up to form the complete filling.

A special paper is used to check the height of your dental filling and that your bite remains correct. Your tooth is then polished.

Advantages & Disadvantages

Advantages

The fillings look natural.
The dentist won't need to drill as deep as with amalgam fillings.

Disadvantages

Composite resin fillings take longer to apply than amalgam fillings, and therefore composite fillings are more expensive placing
